Abstract
Background: Increased cholesterol levels in the blood (hypercholesterolemia) can increase the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease and stroke. Riskesdas data in 2018 showed that 21.2% of the total population of Indonesia aged > 15 years had abnormal cholesterol levels. Objective: To determine the determinant factors of hypercholesterolemia in the coastal population of Simelue, Aceh, including age, smoking status, Body Mass Index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and the degree of physical activity. Methods: This study employed an observational analytical method with a cross-sectional design. This study was conducted in Kota Batu Village, Simeulu, Aceh, with a sample of 95 male residents selected by random sampling. The Global Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical activity Questionnaire (QPAQ). The chi-squared test was used for data analysis. Results: Univariate analysis revealed that the number of active smokers, obesity, RLPP, and hypercholesterolemia was as high as 72.6 %, 16.8%, 31.6%, 73.7%, and 37.9 %, respectively. The results of bivariate analysis revealed a relationship between age and the incidence of hypercholesterolemia (p = 0.001), whereas other determinant factors did not show any relationship with hypercholesterolemia, namely smoking status (p = 0.380), body mass index (p = 0.972), RLPP (p = 0.774), and physical activity (p = 0.774). Conclusion: Age contributed to the incidence of hypercholesterolemia, but there was no relationship between smoking status, BMI, RLPP, and physical activity. Health education is needed for community lifestyle, especially smoking habits and physical activity in coastal communities in the Simeulu region, Aceh, to maintain their health status
